Rotary in action inTurkey

After the devastating earthquakes that hit Turkey in February 2023, causing 50,000 deaths, Rotarians in the three Rotary districts in the region decided they needed to act, in immediate response and also to provide sustainable support for the future.

We support local, national and international charities

Here are some of the charities in our borough of Richmond upon Thames that we are actively supporting.

The Vineyard Community Centre, Richmond
During this Rotary year we are continuing our support to the Vineyard by club members doing shopping on a rota basis for essential items they tell us their clients need, spending £100 each time and delivering it to the community centre.

The River Thames Boat Project

This charity provides access to the River Thames on board their specially adapted and wheelchair-accessible boats, for people of all ages, including those with a special need, disability or mental health condition. We are providing them with one of the two defibrillators they need for their boats.

The Mulberry Centre

The core mission of this charity is to improve the lives of anyone affected by cancer, including those with a diagnosis, carer, family members and bereaved relatives, by enhancing emotional, psychological and physical well-being.
We are helping them with their purchase of a new therapy couch, a specialised essential tool for therapy sessions

For more information on these and other local projects, click on “what We Do” and the “Community projects”

Help for communities in other countries

Lend with Care

Since 2013, our club has been selecting and supporting small-scale entrepreneurs in developing countries by contributing to loans to help them to continue and expand their businesses.  By the end of August 2023 we have made 138 small loans,a total of £6,185, helping 369 entrepreneurs and creating 500 jobs.

We are able to do this via Lendwithcare, part of CARE International UK, a registered charity and a member of the CARE International confederation, one of the world’s leading aid and development organisations. It fights poverty and injustice in 87 countries around the world to help the world’s poorest people find routes out of poverty.

 Disaster relief and rebuilding

Earthquake in Morocco and Flooding in Libya

Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland (RIGBI) issued the following Disaster Response Bulletin on 13 September 2023.
These two disasters have seen thousands of lives lost and people missing and will require a great deal of international help to provide food. shelter and safe drinking water. Whilst Rotary is not a first response organisation, we want to play a part in helping those in urgent need in the most effective way. We are in contact with Rotary-related charities as well as Rotarians in the affected areas. Two Rotary-related charities active in the areas are:

They are working with their partners in Morocco to establish secure supply routes for  providing much-needed safe drinking water to families and communities.  Our club is funding provision of two Aquafilter Community kits, each of which is capable of delivering up to six litres of clean drinking water per minute, and more than a million litres over its working life to schools, clinics, community centres etc.

ShelterBox http://Shelterbox
They are responding to support thousands of people affected by the earthquake in Morocco and will be working in partnership with ACTED in response to the flooding in Libya.  Our club has just made another of our regular donations.

Rotary Ukraine Crisis Appeal. Because of the generosity of donors, we as a club have been able to donate £1,000 to the Red Cross and contribute £1,000 to the Rotary District Fund, to support their efforts in Ukraine. This fund has bought and installed seven housing modules in the village of Moschun, north-west of Kyiv. It is now purchasing two mine-detecting drones to help speed up mine clearance in agricultural areas. During November club members have donated warm winter clothing to be sent by Rotary to families in Ukraine whose homes have been destroyed

Rotary clubs in Great Britain and Ireland (including ours) have now raised over £412,000, helping to provide urgent need to displaced families and individuals.
